Service 68: Service History

Service 68 (1920–1925)

Operated by Birmingham and Midland Motor Omnibus Company Limited

Service 68 was introduced by Birmingham and Midland Motor Omnibus Company Limited (BMMO—Midland “Red” Motor Services) on Tuesday 10th August 1920, initially running between Nuneaton, Hinckley, Barwell, and Earl Shilton.

From Wednesday 11th May 1921, the route was extended from Earl Shilton to Red Cow and Leicester City Centre (Newarkes). Service 68 was the first motor omnibus service operated by BMMO in Leicester, although at the time the company did not have a depot in the city and all journeys were operated by Nuneaton depot. However, additional capacity was provided from Tuesday 22nd August 1922, when Leicester (Frog Island) depot opened as BMMO's first depot in Leicester, and by August 1924, Service 68 had expanded to run with a 30-minute frequency during week days and on Sundays, and every 15-minutes on Saturdays.

From the formation of the company, the system of route numbering used by BMMO was quite chaotic with any new route introduced simply being allocated the next available number in sequence, irrespective of the type of route or the area in which it operated. To simplify matters a numbering system divided into geographical groups was introduced on Saturday 16th May 1925, with Service 68 being renumbered to Service 525 at this time. By 1928, the rapidly growing network forced the company to introduce another new numbering system that saw the route again renumbered, this time to Service 725.
