Midland Red (West) Limited started trading on Sunday 6th September 1981, following the closure and break up of Midland Red Omnibus Company Limited (MROC). The company was formed with 183 operational vehicles and six depots at Bromsgrove, Evesham, Hereford, Kidderminster, Redditch and Worcester, operating ex-MROC services in Gloucestershire, Hereford & Worcestershire and Powys.

On Tuesday 23rd December 1986, following the merger with Midland Red Coaches Limited, the company renamed to Midland Red West Limited, and on Friday 26th March 1999 it was again renamed, this time to First Midland Red Buses Limited.
