Service 376: Service History

Service 376 (1937–1938)

Operated by Birmingham and Midland Motor Omnibus Company Limited

On Thursday 1st July 1937, Birmingham and Midland Motor Omnibus Company Limited (BMMO—Midland “Red” Motor Services) acquired the business and operations of H.F. Taylor of Suckley (trading as “Acton Beuchamp Transport”). The company had run a Fridays-only service between Cradley and Malvern and this was continued by BMMO as Service 376.

The service ran from Ridgeway Cross via Finchers Corner, Prestons Cross, Stiffords Bridge, Ligh Sinton, Interfields and Belmont. It was withdrawn on Friday 27th May 1938 and replaced by journeys on Service 417 and Service 377 connecting at Leigh Sinton.

Service 376 (1946–1971)

Operated by Birmingham and Midland Motor Omnibus Company Limited

In 1946, the Birmingham and Midland Motor Omnibus Company Limited (BMMO—Midland “Red” Motor Services) re-introduced two services running between Cradley and Great Malvern. The first was Service 376 running on Fridays only from Friday 29th March 1946, and the other was Service 377 running on Mondays only from Monday 9th December 1946.

Both services started at Cradley School and provided one journey in each direction, departing from Cradley at 09:30 in the morning and returning from Malvern at around 14:45. The routes were quite different with Service 376 running a similar route to the pre-war version, via Storridge, Leigh Sinton, and Interfields, and Service 377 running via Mathon, Ham Green and Wyche Cutting.

From Wednesday 8th October 1952, Service 376 was also opperated on Wednesdays, and from its opening on Friday 10th September 1954, both Service 376 and Service 377 were always both operated from Malvern depot. In the late 1950s, the departure point in Great Malvern moved from Public Gardens to the Post Office, but otherwise the service remained unchanged.

In the early 1970s, BMMO withdrew a large number of rural bus services and both Service 376 and Service 377 were withdrawn on Saturday 3rd April 1971.
