Service 200: Service History

Service 200 (1921–1929)

Operated by Birmingham and Midland Motor Omnibus Company Limited

Service 200 was the first long distance service to be operated by Birmingham and Midland Motor Omnibus Company Limited (BMMO—Midland “Red” Motor Services), introduced on Saturday 7th May 1921, running between Birmingham, Gloucester, Bristol, and Weston-super-Mare. The service operated only during the summer season, typically starting in May and finishing in August.

For the 1923 season, there were three return journeys a week, departing at 1000 on Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays, and returning on Tuesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. For the 1924 season this was changed to two journeys a week, departing on Fridays and Saturdays and returning on Saturdays and Sundays.

Omnibuses in the early 1920s were not very quick vehicles by today's standards and the 1924 timetable shows the outbound journey took a leisurely 8 hours and 10 minutes… ten minutes longer than it took in 1923! The Omnibus departed the Midland “Red” Chief Goods Office on Seymour Street in Birmingham at 0950 then called at the Bull Ring ten minutes later on Friday and Saturday mornings and didn't arrive in Weston-super-Mare until 1800 that evening, although the schedule did include a 10-minute break in Worcester and a 40-minute break in Gloucester.

The return journey was made on Saturday and Sunday mornings, departing Alexandra Parade in Weston-super-Mare at 1030 and arrived back in Birmingham Bull Ring at 1810. The return journey did not serve the Goods Office and the break in Gloucester was 5-minutes shorter. It is assumed by the timetable that this was an overnight stop in Weston-super-Mare for the crew and they were probably accommodated at a local guest house.

Vehicle designs improved rapidly during the 1920s, and running times were significantly reduced towards the end of that decade. From late 1927, BMMO introduced the first dedicated Touring Coach, the SOS “QC”, and it is probable that vehicle type would have been used on this route and responsible for the improved times. The timetable was also expanded to run seven days a week by this time.

In early 1929, BMMO renumbered their Long Distance Stage Carriage services and Coach services into a new sequence with ‘X’-prefix Service Numbers, with Service 200 becoming Service X20 at this time. The following year the Coach services were again renumbered, this time with single-digit letter Service Numbers in the range from A to R, and the Weston-super-Mare route became Service A.
