Service 311 was introduced by Birmingham and Midland Motor Omnibus Company Limited (BMMO—Midland “Red†Motor Services) in 1926. The service ran between Docklow and Bromyard on Thursday for Bromyard Market Day, and between Grendon Green and Leominster on Fridays for Leominster Market Day. All journeys were operated by the newly built Hereford depot.
On Saturday 11th February 1928, Birmingham and Midland Motor Omnibus Company Limited (BMMO—Midland “Red†Motor Services) renumbered their entire network, and at this time Service 311 became Service 422.
At the end of 1930, the Friday service was withdrawn and Service 422 was running two return journeys between Bromyard and Leominster on Thursdays only for the Bromyard Market Day. The service was now operated by Worcester (East Street) depot and so the first journey in the morning started from Worcester running all the way through to Leominster, and the last journey finished it Worcester in the evening.
By the summer of 1938, the section of the route between Dockley and Leominster had been withdrawn. The service now operated from Worcester to Docklow via Bromyard in the morning, then returned to Bromyard as a short-working journey. In the afternoon there was a short-working return journey from Bromyard to Docklow but the bus did not return to Worcester.
Following the outbreak of the Second World War, Service 422 was cut back due to fuel rationing, and only ran between Bromyard and Docklow. Additional short-working journeys were added on Saturday evenings, running between Bromyard and Bredenbury only.

After the end of the Second World War, Birmingham and Midland Motor Omnibus Company Limited (BMMO—Midland “Red†Motor Services) started to reintroduce some of the services that had been withdrawn or cut back due to fuel rationing from 1939, and Service 422 operating between Leominster and Bromyard returned in 1947.
The post-war version of Service 422 ran on six days a week with additional journeys on Saturdays and for Bromyard Market Day on Thursdays. The service was advertised as running between Leominster, Bromyard, and Worcester, like the pre-war version of the route, but in reality passengers had to change buses at Bromyard (Post Office) for a Service 420 bus for the Bromyard to Worcester section, sometimes with a wait of up to 30-minutes. The requirement to change bus was noted on timetables until the early 1950s, but from the mid-1950s it seemed to appear at random, being shown on some timetables but not others.
In the early 1970s, BMMO withdrew a large number of rural services and Service 422 did not escape these cuts, being withdrawn on Saturday 3rd April 1971.
