Stagecoach is operating the special services for the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. They have drafted in dozens of buses and drivers from all over the country to a depot in Erdington.

The buses, despite not being red, all have Midland Red (South) legal lettering on temporary vinyls....

Meanwhile First Bus Worcester Padmore Street garage 'patch' has 9 double-deckers and two coaches sitting idly with no work since the schools broke up over a week ago on Thursday 22 or Friday 23 July 2022. OK only the four Streedecks with Euro6 exhaust emissions are suitable for Birmingham's CAZ, but there are six semi-redundant ex 'Salt Road' Volvos and two 'Spare Bus' Citaros which are suitable. Is First Bus so small now that it wasn't able to compete with Stagecoach; what a difference at the 2012 London Olympics when First supplied fleets of new buses and drivers from around the country (including Worcester)!

The other question is why First Bus pulled the plug on the Birmingham section of the 144 on 24 April 2022 knowing that the Commonwealth Games started three months later. With the on-going rail strikes I am sure the buses would have been full and double-deckers a magnet for kids.

Excellent point regarding the 144 to Birmingham. Have we heard any news on what is happening with the 144a after it's trial period ??
