Stratford-on-Avon bus rally 1970!

Post by TimBrown » 15:34 Thursday 29th July 2021

During a clear-out of books and papers, I came across some black and white photographs taken by retired Midland Red mechanic/engineer John Dancocks at a bus rally held in Stratford-on Avon way back in 1970 - can't believe that 51 years have passed since!

JUB 29 is a Leyland Titan TD1 which entered service with Glasgow Corporation as GE2407 in 10/28. It was acquired by Wallace Arnold in 1944 and re-registered JUB 29 and retained until October 1952. It was fitted with an 8.6 litre diesel engine and rebodied in 06/51 with Eastern Counties lowbridge L27/26R new 12/32 on Leyland TD2 chassis operated by Keighley-West Yorkshire as YG 2058 (K451) if the information on the website is correct. This bus is still in preservation and the subject of continuing restoration.

LTA 844 was a Bristol KSW6B with ECW lowbridge L27/28R bodywork new 06/52 to Western National as 1825. It passed to Bristol Tramways in 1970 and operated as a driving training vehicle. As far as I can tell it is no longer in existence.

GOU 845 is a Dennis Lance III with East Lancs lowbridge L25/26R bodywork new 06/50 to Aldershot and District as 145. This bus is powered by a Dennis O6 6 cylinder 8 litre engine and fitted with a 5 speed overdrive gearbox and is thankfully still in preservation.

EBO 900 is a Crossley DD42/7 with Alexander lowbridge L27/26R bodywork new 06/49 to Cardiff City Transport as 46; it preserved in the National Museum of Wales.
JP 6032 is a Leyland Titan PD1A with Leyland lowbridge L27/26R bodywork new 08/47 to Wigan Corporation Transport as 34. The destination of 'Pony Dick' is genuine and is the name of a long demolished public house and closed coal mine. The bus is still in preservation. (click on the photo and it will show correct way up)
