Mersey Ferry & Pier Head Pt. I.

Post by TimBrown » 11:41 Thursday 28th May 2020

As the travelling public are more or less forbidden to make pleasure journeys by public transport I thought a few pictures of Liverpool Pier Head and the Mersey Ferry might give a little hope that things might just return to normal sometime in the distant future. I was fitter ten years ago and took advantage of cheap rail offers, plus there was a yellow Cumfy Bus Optare Solo bus direct from Lime Street station to the Pier Head. Sadly the bus has since been withdrawn.

For less than a tenner it was possible back in 2010 to take a round trip across the Mersey to Birkenhead and back on 'Royal Iris' where many of these shots (different dates) were taken from the deck. Some journeys added a circular sightseeing additional tour seaward and back inland.

Great photos Tim.

I was in Liverpool in 2010 as well, but for Diploma course contact days at the University. I managed to do the ferry on a late afternoon commuter round trip from Pier Head, calling at Seacombe and Woodside, for even less than the cruise price - and no "Ferry Cross the Mersey" music!

Despite bargain prices and free parking at Woodside for commuters, I recall that it wasn't well use at all. When we called at Woodside, just one person got off and no-one got on.

I see the commuter trips now just do Pier Head to Seacombe.
