Attached is a link to Daily Mail article giving brief details of £5 billion government boost to bus and cycle facilities in the UK. Any idea what the 4,000 emission free buses will be?

My guess is they will be underdeveloped, overpriced and probably unreliable.

Apparently the UK operates 32,000 buses, which means that 12.5%, 4,000 could be emission free under the big Boris bus plan. I assume they will all be pure electric for city/urban use only as the maximum range seems to be about 150 miles between charging sessions based on current technology (no pun intended). The attached link gives production of electric buses worldwide with little choice of UK manufacturer - those that do seem to use BYD Chinese running gear. However, the Chinese run in excess of 400,000 electric buses, so they must be pretty well sorted out by now!

My guess would be that the majority of these buses (assuming they actually materialise) will go to large cities and conurbations with nothing but cascaded diesel powered older vehicles coming to Worcester as usual - unless Worc. C.C. And Worcester C.C. put in a really good ecological and economic case. Can you see that happening though?

The first of the Yardley Wood National Express West Midlands Electric buses has arrived.
Eighteen are due and some will start entering service this month.
They will go into service on the 6 from Solihull to Birmingham via Shirley.
I hear once all the staff are type trained they will also be used and route branded on other services as well as the 6. Type training has started for the spare and 6 drivers.
Our MD made a bold statement that NEWM will not be purchasing another diesel bus.
The garage has been fitted with the charging points for the impending arrivals.

I got a shock recently when I visited the Transport Museum, Wythall, and saw that there were two new electric car charging stations in the car park !!

Hope you did not get a 'shock', we are still awaiting their final connection prior to opening for the Season! All part of our carbon offsetting scenario to try and convince BCC that we do take some of these pollution matters seriously.....

I was at a Stagecoach Manchester depot today to collect a bus for the Cheltenham races. They had several lanes marked out for electric buses, with a few on charge.

I hear NEWM Yardley Wood depot Electric buses should be entering service from Sunday 5th July on the 6 service
