6233 'Duchess of Sutherland' at Hereford 29 April 2019

Post by TimBrown » 16:36 Monday 29th April 2019

These photographs taken at Hereford station today 29 April 2019 are of 6233 'Duchess of Sutherland' working one of the 9 legs of The Great Britain XII charter train from Taunton to Preston. This Railway touring Company land cruise is only for the well heeled as prices start at £2,695!
I still have my trainspotting book of 1958 which lists many of this class of locomotive roaring through Tamworth low level on the West Coast main line with named trains to and from Euston Scotland and North West England. 'Duchesses' are very powerful and regularly hauled 600 ton 16 coach trains at speeds up to 80 MPH in their heyday.

Good pics, as always.

They were certainly powerful locos although there is a video on YouTube of 6233 on the same train at the weekend struggling and almost coming to a stop on Hemerdon Bank in Devon. Not the first time locos from other regions find the going difficult on GWR routes.

Looks fantastic. I was told that this run was on Sunday but realised just in time!

Here is link to it actually stopped on Hemerden Bank and subsequent restart with a lot of slipping. Was there nothing left in the sand boxes to give some grip?

Hardly unexpected, but I have heard that the driving wheel tyres need attention possibly new tyres and re-turning so this loco may be out of service for some time.
