Apparently Pannier Tank 9600 failed with a hot-box near Tyseley on the return leg from Stratford-on-Avon and Class 47 47773 replaced it for the journey to Worcester and back, so we did get one steam engine in form of Pannier Tank 9466 but behind the diesel!

I didn't wait to see the return working and assume that the tank engine was leading over the Lickey Incline. Apologies for the poor quality photographs caused by low light levels when the train arrived in Worcester somewhat late, just after 15-30.

What a shame - a pannier and a '47' doesn't seem quite right and must have disappointed many enthusiasts. Still, these things happen from time to time and can't really be helped when dealing with such elderly pieces of machinery.

It was an unusual combination and fortunate that Tyseley run a preserved Class 47 diesel which can be rostered at short notice - unlike steam which needs a long period of preparation to raise enough steam for main line operation.

The attached pictures were taken two years ago when the two pannier tanks made it to Worcester and subsequently tackled The Lickey incline in fine style with a good load of eight coaches.
