Worcester Sauce DEMU 7 May 2022

Post by TimBrown » 14:56 Saturday 7th May 2022

The Worcester Sauce DEMU charter is seen arriving in Shrub Hill from Hastings at lunchtime today Saturday 7 May 2022. The Class 201 'Thumper' DEMU (Diesel Electric Multiple Unit) were built at Ashford in 1957 for the Southern Region of British Railways to a narrow Hastings loading gauge and used between London Charing Cross and Hastings until 1986. If you have never travelled in one of these it is quite a revelation, especially if travelling in one of the power cars as the 500 HP English Electric 4SRKT engine (61.78 Litres) vibrates throughout the carriage when accelerating, with a distinctive thumping exhaust note, turbocharger whistle and whine from the English Electric Type 824/1B DC main generator.
