Midwest Coaching 1984-1985 leaflet,

Post by TimBrown » 15:43 Tuesday 18th May 2021

Whilst clearing out a load of paperwork I discovered this leaflet lurking at the bottom of a cardboard box. It was too long to scan each side in one so the pages are out of sequence, but you can see the whole lot. If you click on each picture it will turn through 90 degrees and become readable.

The photographs were obviously taken before the much admired Midwest ivory, maroon and gold livery was applied to the coach fleet. I started full-time bus driving in 1985 - hard to believe that was half a lifetime 36 years ago!

The leaflet was obviously produced before 1002-7 arrived in the Midwest liveries of either gold and maroon or Euro cruiser green livery.

At the time the plan was to set up a coaching unit at the old Bromsgrove garage which never happened as the management teams of Midland Red West and Midland Red Coaches went on to make a joint bid for the companies from NBC thus giving MRW a coaching operation. At the time all the grant coaches from the JOX ..P, RDA ...R, SOA,,S WOC ..T plus single BVP..V were ungraded with better coach seats and long range fuel tanks as these vehicles were going to be used by the coaching unit. Also the 6 Nationals 471/2/484-7 were repainted in Midland Express livery at Redditch and had the same cloth seating as the coaches to help release so of the coaches from bus work.

Bromsgrove Garage went on to be used as a store for the Nationals that were amassed in the run up to de-regulation for the new Digbeth operation before being sold by NBC as a surplus asset when they sold MRW to the management

Interestingly two of the contacts on the leaflet were Melvyn Thomas who was Commercial Managers and Harry the Hat at Redditch both of whom were 2 of the 7 Directors who went onto leading the management buy out in 1986. The 7 owned 70% of the company between them - those of us around at the time know how much some of the drivers and the rest of the staff made when the Company merged with Badgerline and they only owned 30% of the company between them!
