Can I assume that the 144 is WR depot's oldest service number ?
- I believe it's not the original number for the B'ham service, which became the 144 "later", during a grand renumbering.
- As an example, was the 417 given it's number at the same time ?
(I realise this sort of topic "gets a bit messy" if the route is substantially different now, etc).

Yes, BMMO renumbered their entire network on 11th February 1928, and the numbers were allocated at that time... Further reading.
