1962 Anywhere Tickets

Post by TimBrown » 08:45 Thursday 14th March 2019

Re-discovered these Anywhere Tickets lurking in the bottom of a drawer, the first one dated Tuesday 28/2/62 is printed on a thick stiff card - note the date stamp was set for 1961 and the Travel Centre staff member wrote the correct year in ink, which led to a number of curious looks from conductors!

A few months later and the tickets were printed on much thinner card with amended information on conditions of issue and an extra line for the day, in addition to the date. The December ticket also has a hand written instruction 'Not Available on X44' on the reverse just above 'Conditions of Issue' legend.

Anyone remember the National Wanderbus ticket issued by the NBC at some stage in the 70's ?? I have/had a leaflet somewhere . . . . . £2.97 if I recall.

I meant to record that 10/- was half a £ sterling or 50 pence in today's parlance. The 2019 equivalent based on purchasing power in 1962 would appear to be £8-75 which was very good value as the young enthusiast could travel to such destinations as Hereford, Shrewsbury, Stafford, Derby, Nottingham, Leicester, Grantham, Banbury, Gloucester and Worcester with all the towns and cities within this very large area. You just cannot do this on one ticket today unless you are in possession of a disabled or pensioner's concessionary pass.

I do! It was valid from the north Midlands southwards, and I used them for many trips from Birmingham in the late 70s and early 80s. It was £2.40 at first (3 x 80p tickets on Setrights) then £2.97 (3 x 99p).

It was great for multi-company trips. Ones I did included Birmingham - Stoke - Shrewsbury - Ludlow - Birmingham, Birmingham - Northampton - Oxford - Birmingham (not using MR vehicles at all), and an end of holiday Weston-Super-Mare - Birmingham.
