Swadlincote Depot
Midland Road, Swadlincote.
- Swadlincote area served by Midland “Red” buses from
the mid-1920s, using vehicles operated from Tamworth
depot and later Coalville
depot.
- Purpose built steel-framed garage with brick built offices and
workshops. Initial capacity was for 39 vehicles with limited additional
parking available outside.
- Opened by Birmingham and Midland Motor Omnibus Company Limited
(BMMO — Midland “Red”) in September 1931, with an initial
allocation of 25 vehicles.
- Vehicle allocation of 40 vehicles by 1960.
- Company renamed to Midland Red Omnibus Company Limited (MROC)
on 29th March 1974, with a depot allocation of 42
vehicles and approximately 127 staff at this time.
- Depot control passed to Midland Red (East) Limited when the
Midland Red Omnibus Company Limited was split up on 6th September
1981, renamed to Midland Fox Limited on 24th January 1984.
- Depot control passed to Stevensons of Uttoxeter in 1987,
when Midland Fox Limited is privatised in a management buy-out.
- Stevensons of Uttoxeter is acquired by British Bus Group Limited
in June 1994, with the depot and operations subsequently passing to
the control of Midland Red North Limited.
Note: Midland Red North Limited was already
a British Bus Group subsidiary at this time.
- British Bus Group Limited acquired by the Cowie Group plc.
on 1st August 1996.
- Cowie Group plc renamed to ARRIVA plc. on 6th November
1997, with the Midland Red North and Stevensons of Uttoxeter operations
becoming ARRIVA Midlands North Limited soon after.
